Traveling Show

July 30, 2010

One of my favorite parts of the job is when we are called on to bring our animal ambassadors to events outside of Williamsburg, Va. Occasionally we hold education shows outside of the park, so we’re able to introduce the animals to people who may never have the chance to visit Busch Gardens.

While they are a lot of fun, these trips take a lot of planning.  I have to pack for myself and for each animal going with me. Everything required to care for these animals needs to fit neatly in their travel bag. Bowls, cleaning supplies, vet supplies and, of course, lots of food. It sure is an adventure.

One thing is for sure, I am not the only one that loves to travel. We recently took one of our green-winged macaws, Hook, to a baseball game in Waldorf, Md.  Hook loves all the attention he receives, loves the TV in the hotel room and just loves traveling in general.

He tends to get really excited about new places. In this video we are waiting in a stairwell outside the baseball stadium for our time to go out on the field and entertain the visitors. Hook discovered he could hear his echo in the stairwell and treated us to his lovely singing voice. The more we laughed at him the more he sang.

At 36 years old, Hook is one of our oldest birds at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Va. You would never know it though. He is always the first to explore new places. He is just a bundle of energy and extremely entertaining.

When you come to visit us in the park this summer make sure to book one of the behind the scenes animal tours. Hook is one of the animals you may get to interact with during the tour. He might even sing for you!

Hook looks like he was playing to the camera as he sang! This video made my day! So cute!
