Pretty as a Poodle

June 29, 2010

The performers of IllumiNights are learning their parts, practicing daily and recently got a hair-cut to prepare for their newest show. Which performers am I talking about? Dancers? Singers? Since, I am the blogger for the Zoological Department here at Busch Gardens, you can assume that the performers I am talking about are animals.

Each country will have their own festivities, but France is where you will find our two black standard poodles, Zeph and Firm. Firm is an 11-month-old male and Zeph is a two-year-old male. I was able to visit Pet Shenanigans this week during one of their training sessions with the poodles. It has been said that poodles are one of the smartest breeds in the world, but I think Zeph and Firm are some of the sweetest dogs as well. They were super friendly and were more than happy to get lots of love.

The trainers are currently working on getting the dogs to walk calmly on a leash. They are used to walking at a much faster pace, so they are being trained to slow down specifically for the IllumiNight’s parade. It takes a lot of patience from our trainers, but they are showing progress.

Both dogs will be joining a parade that will wind through France nightly. How can you have a French Parade without French Poodles? Our trainers have been spending time with the dogs getting them out into the park at night. It is important that the dogs are comfortable with all of the sights and sounds that come along with being in a theme park.

Make sure to visit this summer and check out Zeph and Firm in IllumiNights: A Busch Gardens Encore.
