Baby Bird Season

May 20, 2010

Spring has sprung and you know what that means, baby birds are here.

If you come across any baby birds that seem out of place, the best thing to do is to leave them where they are. At this time of year, baby birds are fledging. This means they have grown in all of their flight feathers and they are learning to fly. It takes people time to learn to walk, and it takes baby birds some time to learn to get off the ground. The mother can hear her chicks and will take care of them as soon as it is safe for her to get down to them.

It’s a common myth that a mother bird won’t take care of her chick if she can smell that a human has touched it. However, most birds don’t have a sense of smell. The only bird in this area that has a sense of smell is the turkey vulture. So if you are concerned about where the baby bird is, for example on the walkway or in the middle of a store, you can move it gently to a safe place where the mother will be able to access it easily. Give it time. The mother will be sure to come back.
